Journalist shot at, gunman at large

ITANAGAR, Jul 15: In a fatal attack, an unidentified gunman shot at The Arunachal Times Associate Editor Tongam Rina at pointblank range in front of the office gate when she was entering her office around 6:15 pm this evening.

Rina was immediately rushed to nearby Ramakrishna Mission Hospital (RKMH) in a critical condition with the bullet stuck inside her body after entering her left waist, grazing her spinal cord and piercing her intestines.

Till the filing of this report, a team of doctors operated upon her.

This is not the first time that the intrepid journalist has been attacked. She has been attacked and threatened several times in the past. The shooting occurred three months after the  unidentified goons attacked the daily’s office on April 15 last.

Despite pleas, no step has been taken so far to provide security to her.

Taking strong exception to the unabated attack on the state’s mediapersons and lack of action whatsoever against their attackers, the Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) and the Arunachal Press Club (APC) have decided to leave blank space on the front page of every daily as a mark of protest.

Rina is also the president of the APUWJ.

This daily decided to keep all the pages blank and black as a mark of protest against brutal attack.

When will the state Govt, home department and people wake up?
